More than a month has passed since Nancy Guthrie mysteriously disappeared, but one question continues to dominate public attention: what happened to the 84-year-old mother of television presenter Savannah Guthrie?
Nancy was last seen on 31 January at her home in Tucson, Arizona. Her daughter says she believes someone “took” Nancy “in the dark of night from her bed.”
Since then, the investigation has grown into a major national story involving thousands of tips, alleged ransom demands, Bitcoin requests, surveillance footage and DNA evidence. Yet investigators have not announced an arrest or identified a confirmed suspect despite pursuing multiple leads.
For people following the case, the biggest question now centers on whether investigators are getting closer to finding Nancy or discovering what happened to her.
What Do We Know About the Search for Nancy Guthrie?
Authorities found drops of Nancy’s blood on the doorstep of her home shortly after her disappearance. Investigators also believe a masked, gloved individual approached the property and removed the front-door security camera after appearing briefly on it.
The FBI later released surveillance footage showing the masked person approaching Nancy’s home, checking the camera and using vegetation to cover its lens.
The footage attracted widespread attention and generated additional leads for investigators. Police detained a delivery driver for questioning but later released him after authorities ruled out his involvement.
Authorities also arrested a California man over alleged fake ransom notes connected to the case. However, investigators do not believe he played a role in Nancy’s disappearance.
Investigators have examined other physical evidence from the area as well. DNA testing linked black gloves found about two miles from Nancy’s home to a local restaurant employee. Authorities did not consider that person a suspect.

Why Has Nancy Guthrie’s Case Attracted So Much Attention?
Nancy’s disappearance has attracted significant national attention partly because her daughter, Savannah Guthrie, has built a prominent career in television and remains a longtime Today show personality.
Savannah and her family have repeatedly appealed for information that could help bring Nancy home. The family has offered a $1 million reward for information that could lead to her return, while the FBI has offered another $100,000 reward.
The family has also acknowledged the possibility that Nancy may no longer be alive.
On 24 February, as the family increased its reward, Savannah said they understood that her mother “may be lost” and “may already be gone.”
Despite that painful possibility, investigators continue to treat the case as active.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said a dedicated homicide team works with the FBI and continues to follow thousands of leads. He said investigators believe they are getting closer to resolving the case but warned that releasing sensitive information could interfere with their work.
“There’s so much that everybody wants to know,” Nanos said, while explaining why authorities cannot publicly disclose every detail of the investigation.
Is Public Interest in Nancy Guthrie’s Case Fading?
The lack of a major breakthrough has made the wait increasingly difficult for people who have closely followed the case.
Interest surged after Nancy disappeared and investigators released footage of the masked individual. However, public attention has gradually shifted toward other major news stories as the investigation continues without an arrest or confirmed suspect.
Content creator Melinda Long follows the disappearance as part of a community of so-called “mom detectives.” She became particularly invested because her own mother is close to Nancy’s age.
Long says the lack of new information has created a growing sense of exhaustion and hopelessness among people following the case.
However, forensic analyst Joseph Scott Morgan cautions against assuming that fewer public updates mean investigators have stopped making progress.
From a law-enforcement perspective, Morgan says a month does not necessarily represent a long period for an investigation. He also does not believe the case comes anywhere close to cold-case status.
Investigators may have information they cannot release because public disclosure could compromise evidence, investigative methods or potential leads.
Are Investigators Still Searching for Nancy Guthrie?
Yes. The investigation remains active, and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department continues to work with the FBI.
FBI agents have continued visiting Nancy’s Tucson neighborhood and speaking with residents as investigators gather information and follow new leads.
Sheriff Nanos has also defended the investigation. He says the public cannot see the full extent of the work investigators have carried out or all the information they have collected.
Authorities continue to analyze DNA and other evidence in their laboratories, hoping the results will provide a significant breakthrough.
For Nancy’s family and the many people following the case, however, the lack of a clear answer remains deeply frustrating.
